EXIT Dunedin is a collection of written reviews of every final year student from the Department of Fine Art at Otago Polytechnic in New Zealand. This project was carried out by an invited team of individuals in response to the end of year degree show in Dunedin between 16th and 18th November 2006. These writers derive from various backgrounds within the local art community, independent from the Artschool. To read these reviews please view http://buro.net.nz/exitdunedin where they are available to be downloaded and printed. This blog has been designed to allow open dialogue and discussion to continue and develop beyond the completion of the initial review process. Please feel free to make a comment responding to this project and any issues surrounding it.

just because students at an art school choose or are put into a category for their art practice does not mean that in order to understand work done in a certain medium you must know the history. do not be so presumptuous and close minded to think that you must read a video which is made in the category of printmaking as printmaking. this is what a lot of art students are trying to get away from, are you trying to make this idea of categories stronger? next time work a little harder for your ten bucks. other reviews are good though.

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this blog. I enjoyed reading some of the reviews, particularly because of the elaborate language used. In some cases, it was almost possible to imagine what the art being reviewed actually looked like. The words strung together in some way became a form of art themselves - and they say a picture paints a thousand words. Having said that, it would have been good to see some of the art in picture form on this art-based website. Then the reviews could have been tested and it might have triggered more interesting responses. Happy blogging and successful artful ventures to you all.

I would like to know why Catherine Dale said there were tigers in Tina Watt's Work. On reviewing the Blue Period Works and even the Large Tangled Memories work No where could I find a Tiger expect in my mind. Tigers under the bed and Monsters in the caboard. Which in my opinion suggests that Tinas works, unconsciously to Catherine really worked, in bringing to the fore Childhood memories of unease, confusion and fear mixed with joy and excitement. The Fear of the Tiger under the bed. We all, I am sure have this fear within us. Colour and joy where brought to this installation with the elephant image made up of many small salt dough objects individually painted, perhaps reflecting a babys shawl, duvet etc, cross stitch came to mind. The small blue period paintings reminded me of photos left in the sun and leached of all colour except blue, a bit like memories leached of everything except a a little piece of recall. I personally didnt think Catherine earned her 10 dollars with this one because she didnt obviously give the artist a go.
